5 Signs it’s Time to Say Yes to Yourself!
I’m going to discuss yoga teacher training here, but for all practical purposes, you can apply what you read here to anything else on your bucket list. I’m not interested in convincing you to do my yoga teacher training program—unless of course it’s a fit for you.
But I am interested in providing you with some helpful tips on how say yes to yourself when it comes to your big dream.I’ve been training and certifying teachers for fourteen years, and I’ve talked with hundreds of prospective yoga teacher trainees.I’ve learned some tell tale signs when it’s time to say yes to yourself. Here they are:
1. It’s been on your bucket list for a while but you just don’t seem to have the time or the money. Let’s face it. This is just an excuse! You either DON’T really want to do yoga teacher training or you don’t believe you’re important enough to invest in yourself. End of story.
2. You’ve signed up to get a bunch of information about various yoga teacher training programs, but you can’t find the one that’s a perfect fit. Hovering in indecision is a waste of your time and energy! Collecting a certain amount of research is good; too much and it’s just analysis paralysis. You fib to yourself that more research will help you make a better decision when in fact more research is just a way to put off making an important (and sometimes scary) BIG decision.
3. You tell yourself “I’m not ready.” Let’s clear this up once and for all. You will never be ready if you keep listening to your fear. The first step in clearing this up is to ask yourself, “What am I afraid of?” Is it that you won’t succeed at graduating? Or that you won’t apply yourself?
“Decide that you want it more than you’re afraid of it.” — Bill Cosby
4. You say the program I want to take doesn’t fit my schedule. When you hear these words come out of your mouth, take note. It’s a sure sign that you don’t matter enough to yourself! It’s amazing how many women tell me this. They say “My family, kids, husband, job come first.” Well, yes AND no. In the big picture, yes, these other people and things are indeed very important. But what if saying yes to your big dream of doing yoga teacher training would actually make a you a better, happier mom, wife, partner, professional, person? What if the secret answer to your prayers for a respite from the daily grind was to do exactly what you think you cannot do? What if for once, you weren’t at the bottom of your list of things to do, but at the top?
“You must do the thing you think you cannot do.”—Eleanor Roosevelt
5. You dread talking with your boyfriend, fiancée, partner or spouse about your big dream to do yoga teacher training because you’re afraid they won’t support you.Ladies, listen up here! The decision to say yes to yourself does not require another person’s permission! Period. Even if you are not the primary income generator, the decision is all yours. I promise you that once you step into that certainty, the little details—including financing (and yes, it’s a little detail)—will fall into place! Now, that’s not to say that talking it over and asking for your partner to support you isn’t a good thing. It is, especially if s/he will be helping with childcare. But the decision to pay attention to and invest in your dreams is not optional if you care about your health, happiness and longevity. Period. The longer you delay, the more damage you do.
