Are You a Model?
Are You a Model?
In my early 20’s, I was a fashion model. Like my mother who had modeled, I pursued it because I wanted to measure up to everyone else. The problem was that I was comparing my insides to other people’s outsides.
Fast forward. In my late 20’s, I found yoga. It helped me recover my life from an eating disorder brought on by a childhood riddled with trauma, shame and challenges. I practiced diligently and got really good at yoga. I loved it for how it made me feel from the inside out. It healed me.
Yet I found myself once again falling into the trap of comparing myself to others. I took lots of narcissistic photos of myself and posted them visibly wherever I could. Something deep inside me yearned for approval.
But it didn’t work.
I’ve changed my model. Nowadays, I think of a model as someone who is authentic, grounded, and living life on purpose. A model is someone who leads by lifting others up, shining the light on the path, not themselves.
Recently, I shared the full story of my challenge and recovery from an eating disorder in the upcoming book 21 Inspiring Women Share Their Life Secrets published by Women on Fire founder Debbie Phillips. Debbie and the other women in this publication are shining examples of what it means to be a model. Copies will be available for purchase soon. Email me if you want one!
Who’s your model and what inspires you? Post your comments here now. I’d love to hear from you.
